What are the 5 things to consider before starting a business? Is it money, solving a problem, both or something completely different?
We’ve all heard that money is the root of all evil. But honestly, it’s the love of money that is the root of all evil. And this is where we can get messed up really bad.
Think about when you started your business.
Were you excited about how many problems you could solve?
How many people you could help?
Or were you just thinking about the mountain of money you could make from them?
If we’re in business only to make money and not solve a problem, then we already lost. It is our job as business owners to help people reach a particular goal or have a better quality of life with our product or service.
So let’s talk about the 5 things to consider before starting a business so we can get it right from the start.
If you did begin your business this way, thinking only about money, it’s not too late to make some changes. Remember how you feel any time someone is just trying to sell to you. At that moment you see it’s clear that they could care less about whether you need it or not, they just want the sale….sucks right?!!
The gut-wrenching feeling of not feeling valued, cared about, or even worse…used, is just the tip of the iceberg. We have a duty as business owners to meet our patrons’ needs. It’s that part of being in business that gives us a warm fuzzy feeling and keeps them coming back for more. This is where better ideas and innovation blooms to give us ideas on how to keep our customers happy and satisfied. Now let’s get back to it, here are some great things to focus on when you’re starting a business.
1. Focus on what your product or service does.
There has to be a reason why you created your product. There must have been someone along the way (or it could have been you) that really had a hard time with something and you found the solution. What is the solution your product or service offers? This is where you really need to think about it in detail. Does it have 1 major benefit or multiple benefits for the user? Write it all down and think about how it works.
2. Could you do this without making money?
Now this sounds like a hard one, right? Let’s be clear. I’m not saying do this and make no money at all. However, this will tell you if your business is only for profit or if it is really a passion or calling that’s near and dear to your heart. If you answer yes, then you’re in it to serve those you can help and you’ll do it with love. They’ll feel the love and passion in your work, and you’ll love yourself and the job at the end of each day. However, if you say no, then chances are you’re definitely in it for the money only and probably won’t last long doing it. Why? Because it will wear you out. People will sense you’re not in it to help them solve their problem, but just to get their money. This will be a huge repellant and will eventually affect your business negatively. Plus, you’ll find no gratification or satisfaction for it in the future. And trust me, it sucks doing something you don’t love.
3. Focus on being of service.
It doesn’t matter if you have a product or a service, they should both be a form of service. When you’re looking to solve a problem, which is what a business should do, you are serving those you sell to. You should have the “how can I help” attitude. Or “what can I do for you” mentality. It’s not always said, but should always be shown in everything you do.
4. Focus on longevity.
When we’re starting a business we always think about the near future and doing all the tasks it takes to get our company up and running. But believe it or not, most entrepreneurs and small business owners don’t think 3, 10 or 15 years down the road and what that looks like. Yes, there is a lot to do to get the company going but what are you going to do when the honeymoon phase starts running out. Not just how you feel, but how your customers feel too. Our ideas should stay fresh and our plan should always be 3-5 steps ahead. Do you have what it takes to be innovative along the way and still keep that “let me serve you” attitude? Always look for ways to improve, evolve, and if need be, reinvent yourself. Because bliss does not always last. But the vision and purpose should.
5. Have your backend together.
Do you know another way that can serve people? Having your stuff together! That means systems, contracts, software and hardware, products, customer service, and anything else it takes for your business to function properly. Every part should be tip-top. Think of your backend as the foundation of what your customers experience. If the foundation is unstable, then everything built on top will eventually crumble. When you completely miss the intricate details behind setting everything up properly, it will fall apart later on…and we definitely don’t want that. Plus it’s hard to serve your customers when you running around looking for all the pieces of the puzzle just to get your customers what they need. It’s frustrating to them and you. Plus you’re better than that.
So let’s regroup. Take a deep breath. Refocus. Now imagine the person whose life you just made better because you strategically thought all 5 areas through and took the right actions.
Now imagine your customers and what they feel…
Do they have a smile on their face?
Are they forever grateful?
Will they come back for more?
Will they tell their friends, family, and co-workers?
I bet the answer is YES to all the above.
It feels good making money, but making money and helping someone feels GREAT!! Plus, your business will start to grow because your inner motive has changed and you will begin to attract more good into your life.
